India, some people say, exports more engineers than most other goods. Yes thats right "goods". Isn't that what we have become with countless engg colleges churning out engineers by the bunch. Is there a single family today, atleast in the urban areas (and villages too - BITSians know that a little too well lol), who dont have some relation or other in an Engineering College, yes that dream destination for most parents clichΓ©d vision for their progeny. But really do all those poor souls who join these institutions really enjoy being there? Well for starters - NO. For example urz truly. Yes i did join of my own volition, a computer science bachelors course. But was it the education that i dreamt of ? Obviously No - otherwise i wouldnt be writing this blog would i ? The course was filled with subjects that got me thinking - ver the hell are v gonna apply THIS SHIT !!!. Most of the subjects are just a bunch of crap that really is just up for mugging. Imagine the disappointment on getting to know that a little tooo late !!! On top of it all we all have sexy universities who think itz their fundamental duty to see that students score just-pass marks or flunk ( to prove to whom!!!! i really cant comprehend. we all know v r no competiton to IIT or BITS !! so y all the fuss ?? )
Luckily there are a few in those brain-juice-squeezing-institutes who are really creative and who really begin to wonder why the hell did we end up here ?????? Luckily for me my escapades lay in performing for my college rock band and indulgence in music. That really did save my soul. My other co-creative-colleagues, inspite of being in the hectic final year, did manage to come up with our own self-made hostel-horror flick. Now this was the best time we guys ever had in the 4 draining years of college. Though it was amateurish, we accomplished it together as 1 collective team. Now that was 1 thing the college did for us - (no they didnt fund the movie !! ) it brought out the radically opposite latent-talents in us.
It makes you focus on your longer goals - whether u want to end up an engineer or pursue ur creative side n shape up a career in that sphere. Well frankly and regrettably, i will become a fucking software engineer for sure (thats y i made it clear LONG time goals) burying my head in codes, databases and whole lotta other crap, atleast for 10 years because life is not a smooth sailing ship ... it needs power to cut through the storms. Now power here, being Money and Determination. Now thats something thats gotta be earned the hard way. And what better field than IT to make loads of it. And who knows - some of the best people maybe discovered along the way who too are there for the same reason that u are. For ex - the college film crew.
Unfortunately i see a whole lotta my cousins, my friends brothers, sisters n etc etc following the same bridle-path that we took 6 years ago - the IIT coaching, The State entrance exams coaching and what-not-fucked-up coaching !! to end up doing what? Just what the parents and society ordered ? sadly the answer is a resounding YES. If proof is what u want just go around the campus and ASK.
Btw i dont mean that if u dont study and come up with bad marks u r a creative genius. No not necessarily. We have all sorts of characters in engg colleges. Believe me.
OK now i know i m sounding like a huge anti-engg cribber. But u think i m bullshitting here. Most people i know, even nerds n rankers, have cribbed abt being Lost in engg and repent their engg college joinin decision. So i cant help it and if u cant bear readin this nemore - jus few words 4 ya - Go fuck urself.
This post is just so, because if anybody ever.... ever... comes across this blog, itz 2 send across a message - Please donot join Engg if u feel with all ur heart n mind tht itz just not smthing u c urself doin and if u r doing it jus bcoz ur friends are doing it or ur family is pressurzing ya, i promise u, u have just written ur own script for Disaster.
OK this is gonna b my last post on engg. i m tired already & i know so r u !!!
The future posts shall be radically different. ( do i hear sighs!!! lolzz)
P.S : This doesnt apply to students from or joining IIT, BITS as these institutes promote extra-curriculars a lot more than the ordinary. But abt the course no idea dudes n dudettes mayb sm1 frm those colleges should post coz i simply donot qualify.

I second that motion. People, if you still have the time...do NOT join an engg college... especially not the right-side-of-the-brain kind of people. You'll see your souls rotting in front of your eyes..for 4 fuckin yrs... the only thing more scary than that is actually experiencing it.
ReplyDeleteIf there's anything engg. teaches you best, then its to wake the fuck up and start thinking for yourself.
One harrowing experience comes to mind... i think it was in my second year(after I realised what I got myself into), I spoke to a person, who was a complete stranger, and he was worried about his son's future. He said his son just finished 10+2 with an average score and he wasnt showing interest in any of the later courses...the father was perplexed as to which branch of engg. was best for his son...that in itself shocked me, the only choices his father had in mind were the different branches in engg. but nothing outside of it. And when i asked him to talk to his son and ask HIM what he really wants to do...he gave me some kind of confused mumbling response, like i spoke in Latin or something... it took 2 freakin hours for me to expose and explain the whole truth about engg. and he still didnt get it...even when i told him this course could be disastrous to his son... either I didnt give him the answer he wanted, or he found the truth to be a little too scary, as it always is. This whole experience was so sad and frustrating, i dont think I'll ever forget it.
Good post man...I cant imagine what the fuck we were thinking when we joined in... not ONE guy told me what it really was.
